School help??

I have been homeschooled for pretty much my entire life. (I went to preschool and didn't like it.) On September 2nd, I will be going to a private school. I have toured the building and talked to the head of the school already. Some days I think I've made the right decision, but other days I feel as if I'm making a terrible mistake! I'm really nervous about it. Can you tell me about what it's like going to school? Note:  They call the school an "international peace academy." Don't think bullying will be a problem. :)

  • Hey! I'm homeschooled too, but I went to public school up until third grade. I probably can't help you much, but good luck, and I hope you like your new school! :)
  • There will probably be lots of others who are interested in the same things as you. Try to be friendly, but not clingy. Otherwise people might try to use you or change who you are, and that's not okay. And if all else fails, be a unicorn!!!
  • UPDATE: Today was my first day. It was great! I had no trouble talking to people and pretty much the whole day was dedicated to "getting to know you" games (which honestly did get a bit tedious after a while). No work, no homework. I like it. Thank you all for giving me this great advice!! :)
    • You are very welcome, and I'm glad you like your new school so much!! If you ever need advice again, please feel free to ask:)
    • Hey Julia! I'm so glad you like your new school. I think you entirely made the right decision. I hope you have a great school year! :)
  • I go to a private, all girls, STEAM based middle school, and I have found it to be one of the most enjoyable experiences, if not the most enjoyable, school experience I have ever had. Everyone is so nice and accepting, and I'm sure they will be at your school too! I'm sure you'll have a great time while you go there! Good luck! ;D

Everyone already mentioned some good advice on adjusting to the new environment, but I will add that if the workload gets stressful at first; prioritizing is your friend. List out all the assignments you have to do and when their due and how important they are to your grade/learning. Then decide which ones are more important overall to work on first and go down the list from what you think is the next important, etc. Chances are you might not get to everything, and sacrificing some lesser assignments that don't matter in the long run is better than suffering on everything (and/or on the big stuff). It'll save you time and sanity when stuff gets overwhelming, and help you do your very best :D None the less, good luck at the new school! We believe in you!!
  • School is basically a lot of children with different personalities and different upbringings ready to learn. They will always be someone you dont think are nice but there is nothing to worry about. Youll soon make friends and settle in. I hope everything goes great!

Earning Money

I'd really like to earn some money, but I'm not sure how. I'm too young to babysit, and I can't do the common jobs like "selling lemonade" and stuff like that. How should I earn some money? - Anonymous   Hi!   There are a number of ways that kids can earn money, but without knowing your exact circumstances, it’s hard for me to be sure of what methods might work for you and what wouldn’t. And of course, you should make sure to have your parent’s approval for any type of money-making enterprise…

Do any of you have journals or diaries? I do. I first started keeping a diary when I was around five. Now, I have several diaries dating back to my tenth birthday, a few old dream journals, and several hundred notes on my phone (most being my private thoughts, same as my diaries). I love being able to look back through my old diaries and see what I was thinking about six months ago, a year ago, two years ago, four years ago . . . Some thoughts and ideas on journaling: -When my current diary has…

Are your brothers gross too? - Ruby   Hi, Ruby! I only have one brother, but I’m lucky—he’s usually not too gross. :) I do also have three sisters, however, and between my total four siblings, I can definitely sympathize with being frustrated by siblings, at least on a more generic level. I’m not sure if you’re asking for specific advice, but as it happens, I actually wrote a blog post several months ago all about having siblings! If you’d like to give that a read, you can find it by clicking…

Friends and Mature Topics

My friends are talking about really mature topics lately, and I still don't like to talk about that, even though I'm the same age as them. My friends are usually great, but now they're making me feel slightly uncomfortable and out of place. What should I do? - Anonymous First of all, know that you’re definitely not the only person who’s not always entirely uncomfortable with very “mature” topics! Notwithstanding your age, different people have different comfort levels on different things. Not…

Ask A Girl: Need advice? Give great advice? We help each other! Ask your questions or answer any of the questions already here. Your post will appear in a day or two, so check back often. We've had many girls ask if their questions can be anonymous, and that is not possible on this website. We want you to know that girls in NMG can trust each other, even with embarrassing questions. And if you want to, you can change your user name to a "not real" name that will then also be used in the magazine if your Ask A Girl question is published.

Letters To Luna: I'm Luna, the spirit of New Moon. Write a letter to me with your opinions and suggestions about the magazine and website. I love to read all your notes! Because I get so many letters, I can't reply online. But a select few letters get published in each issue!

Body & Feelings: Body image, mood swings, puberty, your first period, and so much more! The information girls need!

Check It Out: Share your rants and raves about books, magazines, movies, products, music, ads, tv, internet and more. Love it? Hate it? Let us know!

For The Curious: How does stuff in our world happen? Post and ask about experiments, tech, coding, math,  science, engineering, and more!  It's all about the weird, wonderful, and wacky! Be curious and be surprised.

Go Girls & Women Change the World: Amazing girls and women make the world a better place every day. Tell us about who you admire - now and from the past.  These don't have to be people who are already famous!

How Aggravating & Howl at the Moon: Tell us when you see something that's unfair to girls and women -you can vent about it here! And, Howl out your accomplishments and the things that make you proud as a person and a girl!

Love Remembers: Whether it's losing a beloved pet or a cherished person, loss is painful and can be difficult to cope with. But talking about our loved ones and keeping their memories alive can help. Share your beautiful memories here.

Random Stuff: Want a place to be silly, start message board games, or talk about stuff that doesn't fit into the other categories? Then check out this message board!

Role Play: Do you like role playing games? RPG’s are games where players (that’s you!) play the roles of characters in a fictional setting and have all kinds of adventures. See where the stories take you!

Voice Box: We can have different opinions and still be friends and listen respectfully to each other. We're interested to learn about other people's points of view and we don't have to try to convince them to think like we do. This is where we share opinions about issues that are important to us.

Contests & Games: Do you love creating new contests or games for everyone to play? Do you love playing in them? This is the place for you to make your own contests and games and invite everyone to participate! Remember, just like everywhere else on, if you make a contest or game, it must be open to everyone who wants to join in!
