Overnight stuff (sleepaway camp/trips on your own)

Hi guys,

I've been thinking about going away to sleepaway camp since all of my friends say it's great, but I've never been away that much before. I mean I've had some sleepovers and stuff but I haven't been away from home for so long with people I don't know. My grade also has a trip to Maine in the summer that I want to go on, but I'm a little nervous to travel without my family because I have a rare disease/condition that sometimes makes me feel sick when I do certain things. After being in the hospital for a month, about ayear and a half ago, I'm not as strong as I used to be. Sometimes I have heat exhaustion, headeaches, or stomach pains if I do certain things. So basically I'm kinda nervous to go and travel and stay away from home for a while, but I want to as well.

What have your experiences at sleepaway camp been? What does it feel like for the first time?

  • I've gone to a (four night) sleepaway camp for the past four years, and it's really fun! I was a little homesick my first year (just for a little bit), but I've made new friends (and grown closer to my already friends) at camp, and overall, it's a great experience!
  • For the past two summers I've gone to a two week long Sleepaway camp. It has been one of the best experiences of my life. Homesickness is a thing, but you will be constantly doing fun activities, and hanging out with your cabin mates. This makes it really hard to actually miss your family. My first year I was sooooooooooooo nervous, but once I got there I made friends, and instantly had an amazing time. The next summer I came back and made more friends, my cabin mates become some of my best friends and my second family, and my counselors were like my parents. To sum it all up. Camp is a challenge, but it's the best kind of challenge.
Some quick tips to make it easier. Make friends with at least one person who has been to camp before. They can show you where everything is and make it a lot easier and less confusing. Also be prepared for the middle of the week unlucky day and the middle of the session angry day. You'll understand what I mean if you go to camp.
    Hope this helps!
    • Thank you SO much! I really do want to go to sleepaway camp and it's helpful to know that someone knows what it's like for the first time
    • THANK YOU!!!
I know I didn't create this board but this is really helpful.

Dealing with Scary Thoughts

Okay i am feeling a bit scared about Dying I never really thought about till my eleventh birthday And i really need some advice – Anonymous      This is a really big, serious topic, but I want to try to tackle it because I know I would have appreciated it when I was younger. As a younger child, I’d sometimes have trouble falling asleep, and with all that empty time for my mind to wander, I always found it drifting towards death. Before I give any advice, I just want to say that I’m really…

How to Talk to Your Crush

What should I do? -Anonymous Your not alone anon, that’s a fear everyone has when they have crush- and it makes sense! Your admiting your personal feelings to another person, being scared of rejection is completely understandable. First of all, if you’re not already friends with this person, try becoming…

Sleeping Over at a Friend's House

When I get invited to sleepover parties, I always end up wanting to go home before bed. Now that I am a rising 8th grader, I am starting to worry that my friends may find it babyish that I can't spend the night. Any advice? -Anonymous      I’ve had experience with this same problem before! When I used to often have sleepovers with my friends, I’d nearly always call my mom to pick me up when it came time to go to sleep. Eventually, I did start to worry that my friends would look down on me…
