NaNoWriMo 2017

Hi, NMG-ers! So I thought I'd make a discussion post for NaNoWriMo 2017 - a place to share tips, to talk about our stories/books, or just discuss any other NaNoWriMo-related stuff.

My book is called The Night Forest, and it's about a girl, Jenni, who lives with her mother, Gwenyth, and her younger sister, Kerry, in the early-ish 1900s. They live near a cursed forest called the Night Forest, because the sun never shines there, and the trees are always bare. There are legends surrounding the Forest, and they all say that if you go in there, you never come out. Jenni has never had reason to doubt the legends, and, even though she's curious about the Night Forest, she remains cautious around it, like everyone else. But when Kerry vanishes into the Forest one night, Jenni has to overcome her fears and venture into the Forest to find her, and she starts off on what turns out to be a life-changing journey.

I'm combining a coming-of-age story with a mystical/cursed setting story for the first time ever, so I'm curious as to how it will turn out. I think I'll post the book on NMG when it's done!

My goal is 700 words/day, and so far I go over my goal every day by about 30 words. Yea me!

So, talk. Learn. And happy writing!

I'm not writing a book for NaNoWriMo myself, much as I'd love to (sadly, I don't think I could handle it on top of everything else I have going on at this point :/), but, in honor of the month, I am doing a "Daily Writing Tips" thing on NMG which I've been updating every day with a new paragraph or two on a subject somehow related to improving writing. If anyone's interested, you can take a look at http://www.nmgmembers.com/articles/daily-writing-tips - I haven't yet written today's topic, but I'd better do that soon, because time's running out. xD

Anyway, The Night Forest sounds like a fascinating book - I'd love to read it if I had the opportunity. ;) I hope some of you will post your NaNoWriMo novels on NMG!

Also, just so you all know, there's actually a section on NMG set aside entirely devoted to NaNoWriMo, including a discussion forum just for stuff related to that! In case you're interested, you can see that page at: http://www.nmgmembers.com/nanowrimo
(Or, to go straight to the message boards: http://www.nmgmembers.com/nanowrimo-message-boards)

Just FYI - happy writing to everybody. :D

Helping a Friend

"I have this friend who doesn't think she's pretty, and she also thinks she's fat. Neither of these are true, and I've told her so, but she doesn't believe me. Advice?" - Anonymous I can definitely relate to this issue, since one of my friends thinks the same thing. I think you're doing the right thing by telling your friend that these negative things aren't true. When I'm with my friend, I tell her the same thing, no matter how many times she talks negatively about herself. In addition to…

Dreams

When I was about three, I had a nightmare where the world was full of moles. The other night, I dreamed I had short hair that got longer after it got wet. I love thinking about my dreams, and talking about them with others. For a while I kept a dream journal, and I still sometimes record my dreams in my regular journal. Sometimes I’ve also recorded symbols and people that occur in my dreams, and figured out which ones appear most. I also sometimes get story ideas from my dreams. I’m working on…

Happy Halloween!

Halloween is in only four days, and my friends and I are so excited to celebrate! Many girls celebrate Halloween by going trick-or-treating, going to Halloween parties, handing out candy to trick-or-treaters, and much more. Halloween is also a time to dress up and pretend to be someone else for a day. Some of my past Halloween costumes have been Supergirl, Batgirl, the rainbow, Cassia from the Matched series, and Princess Leia (who is also one of my role models :) My brothers usually like…

Nostalgia

Do you ever hear your parents, grandparents, teachers, or older friends talk about "back when they were young", or get absorbed in memories of their childhood? Do you ever think about back when you were younger than you are now, or get absorbed by memories from a while ago? Ever felt a sort of fond or sentimental sense of wistfulness over times gone by? Chances are, at some point or another you've felt at least a bit nostalgic. Whether in the context of memories from earlier childhood, thoughts…

Ask A Girl: Need advice? Give great advice? We help each other! Ask your questions or answer any of the questions already here. Your post will appear in a day or two, so check back often. We've had many girls ask if their questions can be anonymous, and that is not possible on this website. We want you to know that girls in NMG can trust each other, even with embarrassing questions. And if you want to, you can change your user name to a "not real" name that will then also be used in the magazine if your Ask A Girl question is published.

Letters To Luna: I'm Luna, the spirit of New Moon. Write a letter to me with your opinions and suggestions about the magazine and website. I love to read all your notes! Because I get so many letters, I can't reply online. But a select few letters get published in each issue!

Body & Feelings: Body image, mood swings, puberty, your first period, and so much more! The information girls need!

Check It Out: Share your rants and raves about books, magazines, movies, products, music, ads, tv, internet and more. Love it? Hate it? Let us know!

For The Curious: How does stuff in our world happen? Post and ask about experiments, tech, coding, math,  science, engineering, and more!  It's all about the weird, wonderful, and wacky! Be curious and be surprised.

Go Girls & Women Change the World: Amazing girls and women make the world a better place every day. Tell us about who you admire - now and from the past.  These don't have to be people who are already famous!

How Aggravating & Howl at the Moon: Tell us when you see something that's unfair to girls and women -you can vent about it here! And, Howl out your accomplishments and the things that make you proud as a person and a girl!

Love Remembers: Whether it's losing a beloved pet or a cherished person, loss is painful and can be difficult to cope with. But talking about our loved ones and keeping their memories alive can help. Share your beautiful memories here.

Random Stuff: Want a place to be silly, start message board games, or talk about stuff that doesn't fit into the other categories? Then check out this message board!

Role Play: Do you like role playing games? RPG’s are games where players (that’s you!) play the roles of characters in a fictional setting and have all kinds of adventures. See where the stories take you!

Voice Box: We can have different opinions and still be friends and listen respectfully to each other. We're interested to learn about other people's points of view and we don't have to try to convince them to think like we do. This is where we share opinions about issues that are important to us.

Contests & Games: Do you love creating new contests or games for everyone to play? Do you love playing in them? This is the place for you to make your own contests and games and invite everyone to participate! Remember, just like everywhere else on NMGMembers.com, if you make a contest or game, it must be open to everyone who wants to join in!
